I mined ~y level 20 in the mining dimension. Took about 30 minutes to find a couple of blocks. If you can find a peaks biome using the nature compass, do it. Go at night and hopefully the biome has peaks above y160. All the blocks will be exposed and glowing. Then set up an ore laser drill (Industrial Foregoing) in that biome with a yellow lens.In atm 7 (1.18.1) its in mountain type biomes. Natures compass shows the type of all the biome as there isn't one just called mountain any more. Apparently it exists from y 20 down but is rare or more commonly (not like iron common) above y170.
