It's my understanding that Marlin did not begin "manufacturing" the 39A First Variation in 1939. They began "manufacturing" it in 1938 (some say late 37) for "release" to the public in 1939. They most definitely were manufacturing First Variations in 1939 but by that time were probably well into the 4 digit serial number range. It's marked 39A on the barrel and has the serial # 3XX (a 3-digit number) under the lever. There is no letter prefix. The serial # is also on the upper half of the receiver on the inside .
